Pam is an alcoholic with a terrible past full of failed marriages and abuse. She uses drinking to cope with her past and to try to move forward in her life. Cirrhosis, the degradation of the liver due specifically to alcohol, has already claimed one member of her family. Letting Pam and her mother run their own lives is like putting a horse in charge of General Motors. You can just imagine the catastrophe that would happen. The horse CANNOT run GM. The horse is fully incapable of meeting with the board, making operational decisions, handling legal issues. I hate to call anything a hopeless case, but Pam might be one. I can’t imagine what kind or length of therapy could help her.
I think she might suffer from borderline personality disorder.

Good point. However, I don’t know if having children will completely distract you from your feelings. What it will do is give you a sense of self-worth and purpose. Two very important things a person needs to avoid addiction.
Perhaps it’s a combination of my thought and yours. Perhaps she is simultaneously bored and her idleness gives her time to wallow in negative thoughts.
